I loved this 1970 sweater from the minute I saw it in the shop. I wasn’t really sure of the reasons why but my instinct told me to ‘go with it’.
So, it was a lovely moment of realisation when I read the statement below from the designer herself, Bella Freud.
The story behind 1970
"While messing around on my photocopier I spied the date 1970 printed in the corner of the catalogue I was leafing through. This date looked good. I kept blowing it up, then cut it out and pinned the strip of white paper onto my black jumper. It had a charm, like a cool record cover. I had read somewhere in a Coco Chanel biography, that she advised women to invest in a string of pearls because it reflected a luminescent glow onto the face. What I was looking at made me think of the early New York punk scene, and Patti Smith. This white stripe with the black writing is like a Punk string of pearls."
- Bella Freud
Here’s the thing: I love pearl earrings and often wear them as I believe they increase the width of my smile - or maybe I’m just fantasising! Who knows. As an image professional we were taught this simple trick and it’s stayed with me. Now my teeth are not as pearly white as they once were, maybe the larger white stripe is a better alternative? What do you think?
